Case Study 5
Courtyard Rear Garden
Like many Victorian properties in England’s inner cities the rear open space of the property comprises largely hard landscaping. In this space the hard landscaping has been supplemented by a collection of potted plants, a small pond and small acer tree. The property owner who is an enthusiastic gardener wished to create a green sanctuary for rest and relaxation.
The design approach agreed provided for a gravel based seating area with stepping stones surrounded by formal plant borders. These borders provided the opportunity to plant previously potted plants including an olive tree, multiple ferns and hostas.
A new prunus tree offers a statement planting as well as screening for the garden. The use of trellising on all the existing fencing supports multiple jasmine and lonicera providing for eventually complete coverage of the fences in a flowering and fragrant green tapestry.
A smaller pond has been created next to the seating area to increase the feel of tranquillity. In addition a raised bed will be the focus of a vegetable garden with adjacent potted climbers including Virginia creeper to cover the existing wall.
